APRIL 2018 MEETING

VICKI SWAN & JONNY DYER

APRIL 2018 SOCIETY MEETING and ACTIVITIES

The Folk Duo, Vicky Swan and Jonny Dyer, delivered an excellent evening’s entertainment at the April meeting of Chelmsford and District Welsh Society. They played an exciting range of instruments, many of which were new to the audience, including the nyckelharpa, a bowed string Swedish instrument which dates back to 1350! Very few players remained in the 1950s but it later enjoyed a revival worldwide. They began their concert with The Wedding March, composed by Jonny who played an accordion and Vicky on the Scottish small pipes and followed with an amusing 16th century ballad, Will You Marry Me?, on a guitar and nyckelharpa. The audience particularly enjoyed a love song about two lovers in Caerfyrddin (Carmarthen) who never met but communicated across a wide river, and sad when he finally crossed over to find that she had married another. Other instrument  they played were an accordion, a fiddle, a cow horn (used for communication pre mobile phone days!), and Swedish bagpipes. A popular favourite  was a Carnival In Venice played with an accordion, flute and whistle. Vicky and Jonny were rewarded with enthusiastic applause.
The fundraising/charity event hosted by Sina Williams raised £252.
